大江東去，浪淘盡，千古風流人物。 故壘西邊，人道是，三國周郎赤壁。
亂石崩雲，驚濤裂岸，捲起千堆雪。 江山如畫，一時多少豪傑！
遙想公瑾當年，小喬初嫁了，雄姿英發。 羽扇綸巾，談笑間，檣櫓灰飛煙滅。
故國神遊，多情應笑我，早華髮。 人生如夢，一尊還酹江月。

Su Shi, Reflection on Ancient Times at the Red Cliff

The Great River Yangtze flows East. Waves wash away through the ages all the spirited and talented personalities. An ancient fortress lies to the West. People say it is from the time of the Three Kingdoms, Minister Zhou's Red Cliff.
A chaos of rocks breaks through the clouds, terrifying waves crack the riverbank. A thousand heaps of snowy foam pile up. The river and mountain are like a painting. At any one time, how many exceptional heroes are there?
Reflecting on the distant past, when Gongjin in his prime first married young miss Qiao, heroic in his bearing and spirit, with a feather fan, and a silken scarf; in the midst of talking and laughter, masts and oars became flying ashes and dispersing smoke.
I travel in spirit to the ancient country: you should laugh at my sentimentality, at my hair gone grey before its time. Life is like a dream. With a wine cup, make a libation to the river moon.



Red Cliff was composed between February and May 2019.
It was written for the Holloway Children's Choir, who premiered the work in the Cathay Future Concert Hall in Tianjin, China, on 15th June 2019, conducted by the composer.

There were three subsequent complete performances during the choir's 2019 UK Tour:
2nd July 2019, in St Collen's Church, as part of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod's @One concert series;
8th July 2019 in the Holywell Music Room, Oxford;
9th July 2019 in the underground theatre of the Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe, London.

These performances included recitation by members of the choir of the respective sections of Su Shi's poem between each movement.

《赤壁 》創作與2019年2月至5月，是霍洛韋童聲合唱團委約作品，並於 2019年6月15日在天津華夏未來劇場由同樣的合唱團而首演，由作曲家指揮。 在合唱團2019年的英國巡演期間，作品另外有三次完整的表演：

19年7月2日：蘭戈倫國際合唱與舞蹈比賽在聖科倫教堂舉辦的“一點鐘“音樂會系列的 專場音樂會。
19年7月8日：牛津大學的荷里韋爾音樂室的轉場音樂會。
19年7月9日：倫敦羅瑟希德布魯奈爾博物館的水下隧道劇場的轉場音樂會。

上述的演出包括在每一個樂章前面由合唱團個別學員的詩詞相關部分的朗誦。
